The Desert Horticultural Society of the Coachella Valley announces its 3rd annual desert garden community day, Saturday, October 11th, 2008.

The event will start at 9:00 am at the Palm Desert Visitor Center, located at 72-567 Highway 111, with activities scheduled through the early afternoon.

The event will include garden tours, presentations, workshops, informational booths, and children’s activities.

• · Tours of the beautiful desert gardens surrounding the Visitor Center and the recently completed Community Center will be offered throughout the day.
• · Presentation and workshop topics will include proper pruning techniques, vegetable gardening, getting to know native plants, the pharmacy in your garden, the placement of boulders in the landscape, how to kill your lawn, and much more.
• · Children’s activities will include “Zoo-to-You” from The Living Desert and “Yards of Fun” from Caliso Learning.
• · Informational booths include Living Desert University, the Desert Water Agency, the Coachella Valley Water Agency, the Mission Springs Water District, the Palm Desert Landscape Department, College of the Desert, California Garden Clubs, Inc., Riverside County Waste Management Department (composting), Santa Rosa and San Jacinto National Monument and others.
• · Meet author Maureen Gilmer and learn about her new book “Palm Springs Gardening.”
• · Meet our local community leaders to hear how they plan to make landscaping in the Coachella Valley more environmentally sustainable.

The event is open to the public and is free of charge, although the Desert Horticultural Society gladly accepts donations. We advise participants to wear comfortable shoes and clothing and to wear sunscreen and other sun protection such as a hat if needed as our average daytime temperatures during that time of year can be in the high 80s and many activities are scheduled for outside.

We also ask that participants leave their pets at home and that small children be closely supervised.

But most importantly we hope you come to have fun while learning how to make good choices on plants and other materials that will create a beautiful, environmentally friendly landscape that celebrates our desert.
